There was a blog post earlier that was predicting Mbed TLS 3.0, which uses Mbed Crypto for cipher and key management, would be available soon. Can you give us an indication whether this is still the case?

As you can seen, the blog mentions that Mbed TLS 3.0 will be available June 2019. As you probably noticed, June 2019 will not arrive very soon:)
There was a delay in this release, and we apologize, but the plan is still to release it soon.
